Sealants - Elasticity

BS 5385 : Part 3 : 1989 Section 3 Clause 19 Movement joints 19.3 Back-up Materials
Where sealants with a large movement capability are used it is essential that they do not stick to the back-up material as the ability of the sealant to accommodate movement will be reduced by any restriction of it’s under face. To prevent this, a bond-breaking tape should be applied between the back-up material and the sealant.

• Comment: The purpose of a sealant back-up strip is to provide a releasable shuttering that allows the installer to shape the sealant to the desired dimensions that maximises stress free flexibility.

• Comment: The purpose of a sealant bond-breaker tape is to prevent 3 side adhesion of the sealant that might otherwise resulting in de-bonding or tearing under the tensile effects of joint expansion.
